Exploring Future Possibilities: Tools for Engaging Youth in Foresight Events

Creating a brighter tomorrow starts with the youth of today. Foresight events are crucial for helping young people explore potential future scenarios and prepare for upcoming challenges. That is why the FYI project includes foresight workshops for youth in 5 different EU countries as one of the main project activities. In this blog, we want to highlight tools and techniques that can be employed in these events to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among young participants.

The Importance of Foresight in Youth Engagement

Foresight involves the practice of imagining multiple future possibilities. For young people, participating in foresight workshops can enhance their analytical skills and empower them to make meaningful contributions to society by advocating for change.

Fostering a sense of purpose among young individuals is vital. By engaging them in foresight activities, we provide a platform for their voices and creativity. This allows them to become better decision-makers, understanding the consequences their actions will have today and in the future. For example, discussions around climate change can motivate youth to adopt more sustainable practices immediately.

Existing Tools for Foresight Events

A variety of established tools can be employed effectively in foresight events. In the lifespan of the FYI project, the consortium designed (or will design) a collection of useful materials that youth workers and educators can utilise when working with young people. As a core document, the Manual can provide the theoretical basis for somebody who is new to foresight methodologies. It is a good starting point for everyone, who would like to delve in the topic of foresight. It discusses and presents different tools and methodologies for foresight work, such as scenario planning, that invites participants to develop narratives about possible future scenarios. Tools like the futures wheel help youth visualize various outcomes based on different variables. It's a comprehensive collection of different tools to explore the future of key topics and social areas of change. They help young people identify personal, technological, and societal influences, which deepen their understanding of complex issues in today’s rapidly changing environment. The Manual also focuses on structured methods, encouraging critical thinking about "what if" scenarios. When working through these discussions, young people can see how their choices might shape the future.

Complementing the Manual are different educational materials, designed to enhance the learning experience in a fun and interactive way. It's a collection of online games and tools, such as interactive presentations and other multimedia materials, that young people can use to strengthen their knowledge on the topic and gain new competences and useful insights, empowering them to become active members of the society.

Online Collaboration Platforms

Digital tools can greatly enhance foresight event experiences for youth comfortable with technology. Platforms like Miro and MURAL offer interactive ways for participants to brainstorm and visually map their ideas. FYI consortium wanted to convey the topic of foresight to young people in a way that is close to them, and as digital citizens, youth are natives in a digital environment. What better way to get to them, then building a digital community, using Discord.

Digital tools and platforms offer collaboration, foster expression and teamwork, allowing young people to connect, regardless of physical distance. This flexibility opens doors for inclusivity, encouraging broader participation.
